I've been talking a LOT about Open to Work on LinkedIn lately.

Last week, I shared why I recommend creating an Open to Work Info Sheet. Tuesday, I showed you how to write a LinkedIn announcement that gives your network enough information to help.

But there's one more piece to this.

You need a plan for getting that announcement in front of people.

You can write a terrific LinkedIn post, hit publish, and then wonder if anyone is going to see the damn thing.

Here's my five-step approach:

STEP 1: Get your Open to Work Info Sheet ready.

It's a one-page summary of the roles you want, your skills, accomplishments, and contact information. Something people can easily share when they want to help.

STEP 2: Write a specific LinkedIn announcement.

Include your target roles, location, work preferences, and 2–3 accomplishments that show your impact. Numbers help! See my post for more info.

STEP 3: Pick a day and warm up your network.

I generally like Tuesday or Wednesday, and avoid the weekends. If you're not too active on LinkedIn, spend a few days commenting on relevant posts and connecting with people in your industry before you publish your own post. This "warms up" the algorithm.

STEP 4: Give a few friends a heads-up.

Tell a few people that you're planning to announce your search. Ask if they'd be willing to comment, share, or make an introduction. Send them the link when it's live.

STEP 5: Stick around after you publish.

Don't hit Post and disappear. I like to comment for 15 minutes before I post (to warm up the algorithm), and reply to all comments, especially in the first 60 minutes ("the golden hour"). Thank people who share your post, and follow up on introductions.

Is this more work than clicking the green Open to Work banner? Absolutely.

But you're making it a whole lot easier for people to help you.

And speaking of LinkedIn, are you spending your time here doing the RIGHT things?

Posting, commenting, networking, messaging recruiters, scrolling through job listings...

Good golly. It's practically another full-time job.

But how much of that activity is actually helping you get hired?

That's what Deb and I are talking about tomorrow on our FREE LinkedIn Live, Em + Deb Shoot the Sh!t:
